Sunday was a beautiful day for baseball at Roby Park. The home team Phillies hosted the Astros in a late season Rookie matchup. Early in the first inning the Astros showed remarkable timing in their swings as they sent hard drive after hard drive straight up the middle of the diamond. Coach Ben Olsen spent the entire inning ducking and dodging baseballs and probably considered waiving the white flag on several ocassions. The Phillies came to the plate in the bottom of the first determined to match their opponents hit for hit. Ryan Lentin came to the plate with a new bat and a new attitude to match. His first hit of the day was a well struck drive that landed just short of the outfield grass. While the offense in the game was exciting, the late season form of both teams defensively was commendable. Defensively the Phillies tandem of Kevin Hayes, and Nathan Grant made nice stops and flipped the ball to their teammate who was covering second for the force outs. Alex Esquivel had the unenviable job of playing pitcher in the first inning and doggedly chased baseballs that careened off the pitching machine all inning. Defensively the Astros gave their all and made several good stops, and good decisions with the baseball. Other highlights included: Drew Dunham vacuuming the ball at shortstop for an out at second. Trevor Beaton took control at second base with a diving stop for the force out, and Katie Paquette caught at the plate preventing 3 runs to be scored during the top of the first. Plate highlights for the Phillies included the aforementioned Kevin Hayes who has shown tremendious improvement at the plate over the last few games. His 3 for 3 performance was his finest thus far this season. Andrew Guo also has begun to settle in at the plate hitting hard grounders all three times hit visited the plate. For the Astros Riley Olsen hammered a shot to deep right field and Adam Paquette didn't hold back sending a rocket up the third base line. Sara Widtfeldt went 3 for 3 having a grand slam homerun in the the top of the 2nd. This game was hard played, and fun for all involved. These two Rookie teams gave their all, and really showed off their developing talents on the ball field. Through out the game both teams had very loud, and supportive fans that cheered their players on through out the game. Good luck to both teams as this years spring season winds down.
